The Parliamentary Library is located on the ground floor of the western wing of the Public Buildings. The Library contains official records, current affairs journals and comparative research material on subjects such as constitutional law, electoral systems, environmental laws, local government systems and parliamentary procedures. Historical maps and photographs are also available in the Library.
Parliamentary documents were previously stored in the dome of the Public Buildings. By the 1970s, the collection outgrew the space and a loft was built to accommodate the documents. The loft, however, did not provide an adequate facility for researchers and also became a depository for copies of legislation for sale.
In 1996, a significant step toward the development of the Parliamentary Library was made with assistance from the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs.
NDI contributed relevant Publications and Books to the Library. Parliamentary Library Staff were trained in Introductory and Intermediate Computer Literacy; a Parliamentary Website was developed to assist the MPs and other persons using the Parliamentary Library in their research.
Recently, NDI in collaboration with the Clerk of the National Assembly conducted a Survey to ascertain the extent of use and the usefulness of the Parliamentary Library Facilities and to identify areas for improvement. The Survey results will serve to make the parliamentary resources more effective and relevant to the needs of Parliament and the general public.
Today the Library staff assists in providing research services to Members of Parliament and other persons. The Library utilizes up-to-date computer technology to maintain records of all parliamentary documents. Other services include access to e-mail, the Internet and photocopying.
