Parliament, UNICEF, UG Art Competition concludes

The Parliament of Guyana in partnership with UNICEF and The University of Guyana recently held an art competition under the THEME: GOVERNANCE AND CHILD RIGHTS for children in Guyana. The objective of the competition was to encourage and bring visibility to child rights in Parliament- with a focus on governance and child rights. This it is hoped, will add to the larger objective to create an image that promotes the rights of children to live free and fulfilling lives, to be free from all forms of violence, abuse, and abuse of every kind.
The competition created opportunities for children throughout the 10 administrative regions of Guyana including those who are in vulnerable settings including “street” children and/disadvantaged, as well as, children in rural and hinterland regions to develop self-expressions, through their interpretation of ‘Child Rights and Governance’. This will be done through drawing, painting, collage, assemblage, and mix-media.
This competition was opened to children within the age groups of 4 – 6, 7 – 9, 10 – 12, 13 – 15, and 16 – 18 years age group residing in all 10 regions of Guyana. The participants were invited to create artworks in the categories of DRAWING and PAINTING, PAINTING POSTER and CRAFT, expressing their vision of as it relates to the theme with a caption if necessary. CRAFT items were mandated to either be fired or green ware ceramics, decorative arts, assemblage, textile designing and manipulation.
The competition was judged in the following categories: 4-12 yrs Drawing and Painting: poster, emulsion, pastel, pencil, charcoal, chalk, crayons and mixed media. 10 -12 yrs Poster: poster, emulsion, pastel, pencil, charcoal, chalk, crayons and mixed media. 13 – 18 yrs: poster: emulsion, pastel, pencil, charcoal, chalk, crayons and mixed media. 13-18 yrs - Drawing: pencil, charcoal, pastel, pen & ink, crayon, chalk and etchings. 13-18 yrs - Painting: oil, gauche, watercolor, acrylic, emulsion, poster, enamel, and mixed media. 13-18 yrs - Craft: ceramics, decorative & fiber arts print making, mosaic, collage, Montage, textile design, leather craft, assemblage, etc.
Entries received came from Surama in Region 9, Timehri, Vreed – en – Hoop, Eccles, Bath Settlement, Belladrum, Waterloo, and The Harold B. Davis Special School/Ptolomey Reid Rehabilitation Centre to name a few.
Submissions are currently on display at the Parliament Office, Public Buildings, Brickdam.
