Hon. Manzoor Nadir, M.P., Speaker of the National Assembly of the Parliament of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, met with the Speaker of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis, Hon. Sahiba Gafarova, on Saturday, March 23, 2024, during the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly.

The meeting between Hon. Manzoor Nadir and Speaker Sahiba Gafarova emphasised the importance of parliamentary cooperation between Guyana and Azerbaijan.

Speaker Nadir underscored that Guyana attaches special attention to co-operation in international parliamentary entities and plays a key role in the IPU, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and ParlAmericas, and is engaged in a number of parliamentary bilateral partnerships.

Both speakers discussed various areas of mutual interest, including the significance of the links within the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement which was established at the initiative of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the countries’ tolerance for multiculturalism, and respect for international law and territorial integrity.

The meeting concluded with Speaker Gafarova proposing the drafting of a formal friendship agreement between the two Parliaments. The Hon. Speaker Nadir agreed.
