Parliament of Guyana Launches Football Match against the Diplomatic Corps as part of a Series of Activities to Celebrate its 70th Anniversary

The stage is set for an exciting showdown between the Parliament of Guyana and the Diplomatic Corps. This year the Parliament of Guyana celebrates its 70th Anniversary as a Legislature.
As part of a series of activities to commemorate this milestone, a Football match has been organised between a team from the Parliament of Guyana (Team Parl.) and a team from the Diplomatic Corps (Team DPL).
The launch was held today in the MP’s Lounge, Public Buildings, Brickdam, Georgetown.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m., on February 21, 2023, at the Everest Cricket Sports Ground, Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.
Hon. Manzoor Nadir, M.P., Speaker of the National Assembly, during his remarks at the launch, shared a brief history of the first elected Parliament and outlined the list of activities for the period of the commemoration.
Some of those activities include:
· The Canadian Vision Care Programmed to Guyana,
· Speaker’s T-20 Cup,
· Regional Speaker’s Youth Debating Competition,
· Reception and renaming of the Parliament Library,
· International Speaker’s Softball Cup,
· Annual Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition
· and a Special Sitting of the National Assembly
The E.U. Ambassador, Mr. Rene Van Nes, congratulated the Parliament of Guyana on achieving this milestone and expressed his eagerness to participate in this matchup.
During the halftime of this friendly match, Members of Parliament and special invitees from the Diplomatic Corps will have the opportunity to “Get one pass the Speaker.”
Ten persons, via random selection, may attempt to score a goal against the Hon. Manzoor Nadir, M.P., Speaker of the National Assembly.
In his brief remakes, the Hon. Lennox Shuman, M.P., Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, said during a game of cricket against the Diplomatic Corps, the idea to organise a football match materialised.
The E.U. Regional Security Advisor, Mr. Charles Suilen, said that his team has been training since last year and is confident in their ability to come out victorious.
Also present during the launch was Mr. Anil Singh, Managing Director – PREMIER Insurance Company INC., Ms. Deslyn West, Assistant Clerk of the National and Staff of the Parliament Office.
The football match will be live-streamed on the Parliament of Guyana’s website, Facebook, and YouTube pages.
