SPEAKER OF THE PARLIAMENT OF GUYANA MEETS WITH SPEAKER OF THE PARLIAMENT OF SURINAME

Hon. Manzoor Nadir, MP, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Parliament of Guyana, on 30th November, 2020, virtually met with Hon. Marinus Bee, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Suriname.
During the meeting, which was initiated by Hon. Speaker Nadir, the two Speakers congratulated each other on their recent ascension to the Office of Speaker.
The discussion premised on continued cordial relations between the two Parliaments and cooperation in parliamentary groupings both Parliaments are members of. Both Speaker Nadir and Speaker Bee are newly appointed Members of the Board of Directors of ParlAmericas.

Formal relations between the Parliaments of Guyana and Suriname were initiated in 2008 when a Delegation from the National Assembly of the Republic of Suriname, led by then former Speaker Hon. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, visited the Parliament of Guyana in October, 2013. That visit resulted in the drafting of an agreement between both Parliaments.
A Delegation from the Parliament of Guyana, led by former Speaker Dr. Barton Scotland, returned a visit to Suriname in 2015.
The agreement was signed by the two former Speakers Scotland and Geerlings-Simons in Suriname in July, 2016.
Guyana’s National Assembly, at its 42nd Sitting on 8th August, 2016, passed a Resolution cementing the partnership between the two Parliaments.
Ms. Carlleta Charles, Parliamentary Executive Officer, Parliament Office of Guyana, and Mr. Steven Ishwardat, Advisor on International Relations to the Speaker of Suriname, were also present at the meeting.
