Guyanese Indigenous MPs share Stage at 146th IPU Assembly

On Tuesday, March 14, 2023, Guyanese Indigenous Members of Parliament Dawn Hastings-Williams and Lenox Shuman shared the stage at the General Assembly of the IPU.
MP Hastings-Williams chaired the Session which focused on inclusive societies and fighting intolerance while Deputy Speaker Shuman was among presenters on the topic.
From the onset of the presentation, the Deputy Speaker affirmed that the mere presence of himself and Indigenous colleague is testament to the inclusive nature of Guyana's democracy, which is birthed out of a tolerant society.
Mr. Shuman pointed out that the rights of the citizens are enshrined in Guyana's
Constitution, one of the most progressive in this part of the hemisphere, and that legislation like the Amerindian Act ensure minority groups are given equal opportunities.
Mr. Shuman was the second speaker from the Guyana Parliamentary Delegation to the 146th Assembly. The Hon. Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud commenced Guyana's contribution earlier that day.
