Georgetown, Guyana – In a compelling and spirited performance, the Ruimveldt Life Improvement Centre Youth Ministries Youth Group clinched their first win in Match 7, Round One of the 2025 Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition. The face-off took place at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, in the Chamber of the Public Buildings, Brickdam, Georgetown.

The debate, which featured two dynamic and well-prepared teams, was the first of two held that day. Competing against a remarkable team from the Bygeval Secondary School Debating Club, the Ruimveldt Youth Group demonstrated exceptional critical thinking and persuasive delivery as they argued on the Opposition side of the moot: “Countries should stop complaining about climate change.”
The intense exchange of arguments and rebuttals was so engaging that it sparked a sidebar discussion among the distinguished judging panel, further testament to the high calibre of discourse presented by both teams.
Ultimately, the Ruimveldt Life Improvement Centre Youth Ministries Youth Group emerged victorious with an average score of 225 points, edging out Bygeval Secondary School’s 217 points.

Despite the team’s loss, Ms. Lashon Samuels of the Bygeval Debating Club earned the Best Debater award for her outstanding bravery, clarity, and critical engagement with the topic.
This win not only advances the Ruimveldt Youth Group to the next round of the national competition, but also secures their qualification to participate in the prestigious 10th Annual Youth Parliament.
The Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition continues to serve as a dynamic platform for young Guyanese to interrogate pressing national and global issues, sharpen their analytical skills, and nurture leadership potential.
Stay tuned and join us live as the 2025 competition continues to spotlight youth voices, bold ideas, and future leaders across Guyana.
