Georgetown, Guyana – The University of Guyana African Cultural Association (UGACA) Youth Group has advanced to the second round of the Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition 2025 after securing a commanding victory over the Mabaruma Rising Youth Group in Match 5, Round One of the tournament.
The debate, held in-person on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, in the Chamber of the Public Buildings, was the third of four matchups that day. Competing on the moot “Democracy is the best form of government,” both teams impressed with their compelling arguments, sharp rebuttals, and displays of respectful, constructive discourse. However, it was the UGACA Youth Group, arguing for the Proposition, that emerged victorious with a combined average score of 232 points, surpassing the 214 points scored by the Opposition, the Mabaruma Rising Youth Group.
Standout performer Ms. Tasiyelle Paul of the UGACA Youth Group was named Best Debater for her articulate delivery and persuasive arguments, which captivated both judges and audience alike.
With this win, the UGACA Youth Group now advances to the second round of the competition and secures their place in the 10th Annual Youth Parliament, a significant platform for youth engagement and leadership in national discourse.
The Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition continues to provide a critical space for young voices across Guyana to explore pressing national and global issues while sharpening their public speaking and analytical skills.
