This week’s edition will examine another four (4) former Members of Parliament visited by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Sherlock Isaacs, A.A., and his team.
"It is nice to see that you are doing this," said Ms. Satti Jaiserisingh, former Member of Parliament, during the visit by the Clerk of the National Assembly.
Before receiving her Plaque and Certificate, Ms. Jaiserisingh expressed gratitude for the visit and reminisced on her time as a Member of Parliament.
It’s a good idea, said Dr. Roger Luncheon, former Member of Parliament, “I must thank you for the gesture, it is appreciated”.
During the visit to his office at the Office of the President, Mr. Isaacs thanked Dr. Luncheon for his lengthy, dedicated service as a Member of Parliament and Head of the Presidential Secretariat to benefit of the citizens of Guyana.
Mr. Isaacs informed the former Members of Parliament of his commitment to producing an archival project in the form of a booklet which will be presented, by him, to each former Member. The booklet will include background information, and a compilation of speeches, Bills, or Motions presented in the house by each former member.
“Getting the archives right, there is value in that said Mr. Andrew Hicks, Former Member of Parliament, referring to the booklet.
Mr. Hicks further said, “Guyana has a very youthful population, and I hope that the young people moving into politics, wouldn’t only do things differently but better.
The outreach programme was initiated to visit, express thanks, and check on the welfare of former Members of the National Assembly of the Parliament of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. It would also allow for our young citizens to know the former Members of Parliament.
"What you are doing here is commendable, it speaks to the fact that there is honour and dignity in labour,” said Mr. Hicks.
Mr. Hicks applauded the gesture by saying he was happy to celebrate the experience while he is young. “In that way, I can not only celebrate it but promote the institution,” said Mr. Hicks as he received his Certificate of Appreciation.
According to the Clerk, this was his way of checking on the welfare of the former Members of Parliament who spent long hours in the National Assembly debating policies and making laws for the good Government of Guyana.
“It is an important place," said Mr. Anthony C. Xavier, former Member of Parliament, Minister of Public Works and Communications, Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, and Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, as he referred to the relevance of the National Assembly during discussions with the Clerk of the National Assembly.
“Constructive criticism is the way to go, “said Mr. Xavier, as he referred to the roles of shadow ministers within the House, “they must hold not just the ministers they shadow accountable but the Ministries as well.”
The former Members were presented with Certificates of Appreciation, Plaques for their years of dedicated service, and COVID packages containing vitamins and cleaning supplies, among other things.
Mr. Isaacs, during each visit, assured the former Members of Parliament that his secretariat will continue checking on their welfare on a quarterly basis.
