Istanbul, Türkiye - A Guyanese Parliamentary Delegation, headed by Hon. Manzoor Nadir, J.P., M.P., Speaker of the National Assembly and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Governing Council Member, is attending the 152nd Assembly of the IPU and related meetings at the Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel & Conference Center, Istanbul, Türkiye, during the period April 15 - 19, 2026.
The Delegation is also comprised of Hon. Dr. Vindhya Persaud, M.P., Minister of Human Services and Social Security, and Member of the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians of the IPU; Hon. Warren Kwame McCoy, M.P., Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, and Member of the Bureau of Democracy and Human Rights of the IPU; and Dr. Carlleta Charles, Secretary to the Delegation and Parliamentary Executive Officer.
The Assembly will see a General Debate on the theme, “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations”.
The week of activities is as follows:
· Meetings of all the IPU’s parliamentary bodies, including Standing Committees, and the Forum of Women.
· Expected adoption of resolutions on Parliaments’ role in establishing robust post-conflict management mechanisms and restoring peace; and in combating protectionism, reducing tariffs and preventing corporate tax avoidance.
· The 50th anniversary of the IPU Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, a unique mechanism which defends parliamentarians' rights worldwide.
· Workshops and side events for parliamentarians on empowering people with disabilities, interfaith dialogue, the two-State solution for Palestine, and climate change.
· The election of a new IPU Secretary General to replace Mr. Martin Chungong, whose third term ends on 30 June 2026.
· Adoption of a new IPU Strategy for 2027-2032.
Speaker Nadir and Minister Persaud will address the Assembly, which is anticipated to conclude with the adoption of an outcome document on the overall theme of the General Debate.
Minister McCoy will deliver a presentation to the IPU Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights on the topic of ‘Advancing parliamentary action on artificial intelligence’.
The IPU, founded more than 135 years ago, is a global organisation comprising 183 National Parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies. It facilitates parliamentary democracy and supports parliamentarians in promoting peace through useful platforms to build sustainable relationships and networks with one another.
