The meeting, held on April 14, 2026, in Istanbul, Türkiye, commenced with welcome remarks by Senator Rojo Edwards of Chile, President of GRULAC. This was followed by remarks from IPU President Tulia Ackson, who noted that she was there to hear about the issues affecting GRULAC. Among the matters raised were the recognition of Spanish as an official language of the IPU and the need for greater assistance to Small Island Developing States to support their participation in IPU Assemblies.
A significant portion of the session was dedicated to presentations and exchanges with candidates for the position of Secretary General of the IPU. Discussions also explored the potential for a unified geopolitical position among GRULAC members.
The session further included reports from members of the IPU Executive Committee and other statutory bodies, as well as a presentation by co-rapporteurs on building a fair and sustainable global economy, with emphasis on combating protectionism, reducing tariffs, and preventing corporate tax avoidance.
The participation of the Guyana delegation underscores the country’s continued commitment to multilateral parliamentary diplomacy and active engagement in addressing regional and global challenges through the IPU framework.
