During Session 1 of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Seminar for Parliaments of Latin America and the Caribbean – Understanding the climate change and environmental context in Latin America and the Caribbean - Hon. Vickram Bharrat, M.P., Minister of Natural Resources, on Tuesday, 28th June, 2022, informed Parliamentarians at the gathering in Uruguay, that Guyana remains laser-focused on its carbon emission agenda and is earnest towards keeping their numbers negative.
Minister Bharrat agreed with the presenters on the topic that the developed countries are major pollutants, and their actions should be condemned. However, he underscored the importance of commending developing countries such as Guyana.
Hon. Bharrat promulgated that, while it is important to take measures to mitigate against the negative impacts of climate change, developing countries should not cease exploring and developing natural resources, but they should do so responsibly. In this regard, Guyana is committed to exploring and producing its natural resources responsibly and sustainably.
The Hon. Minister concluded his presentation by explaining to the Seminar that financing is necessary to reduce carbon emissions, and so there must be a balance in activities in developing countries.
The Seminar will end on 30th June, 2022.
