Tashkent, Uzbekistan – On April 6, 2025, the Hon. Manzoor Nadir, M.P., Speaker of the National Assembly of Guyana, delivered a compelling speech during the General Debate at the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly. The debate, held at the Congress Centre Multifunctional Hall, brought together representatives from over 130 Parliaments from around the world under the theme, “Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Justice.” In his address, Speaker Nadir underscored the importance of instituting robust legislation to safeguard Guyana's most valuable resource—the human resource. He highlighted the country’s legal and policy framework as a foundation for promoting social development and justice while aligning with international standards.
Speaker Nadir specifically referred to Article 159 of Guyana’s Constitution, which enshrines fundamental rights and ensures protection against discrimination based on race, sex, or gender. He elaborated on key legislative measures, including the Public Assistance Act, Old Age Pension Act, National Insurance Scheme Act, Education Act, Labour Act, Equal Pay Act, and Occupational Safety and Health Act. These laws, he noted, play a pivotal role in upholding citizens' rights, providing financial aid to vulnerable groups, and ensuring equity and safety in various sectors of society.
The Speaker’s remarks resonated deeply with delegates who reaffirmed the importance of protecting human rights and freedoms globally. They emphasised the urgency of addressing the challenges faced by individuals and communities worldwide.
The Hon. Kwame W.E. McCoy, M.P., Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, is also scheduled to present during the general debate.
The 150th IPU Assembly serves as a vital platform for nations to share perspectives, strengthen collaborations, and promote a united approach toward social justice and development.
