Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Manzoor Nadir, M.P., Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Vickram Bharrat, M.P., and Parliamentary Executive Officer, Ms. Carlleta Charles, are currently attending a Regional Seminar on Climate Change for Parliaments of Latin America and the Caribbean, in Montevideo, Uruguay, from 28th - 30th June, 2022.
The Seminar is a joint effort by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Parliament of Uruguay which intends to bring together parliamentarians for critical inter-parliamentary dialogue to enhance climate action in the region. It will provide parliaments with the opportunity to share best practices, experiences and lessons learned from their national efforts to address climate change, including through the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
The Seminar consists of four sessions: Session one: Understanding the climate change and environmental context in Latin America and the Caribbean; Session two: Accelerating a clean energy transition and enhancing climate finance to implement the Paris Agreement; Session three: Prioritizing equitable climate action: Promoting public participation and social inclusion; and Session four: Supporting climate-resilient agriculture and livelihoods: ensuring food security and human and environmental health. Speaker Nadir is expected to present in Session two.
In keeping with the Nusa Dua Declaration on mobilising parliaments to act on climate change adopted at the 144th IPU Assembly (March 2022), the Seminar also aims to promote stronger regional cooperation to encourage the development of joint parliamentary solutions to tackle the crisis.
The sessions will be followed by a field visit organised by the Parliament of Uruguay, as well as a celebration of the 133rd anniversary of the IPU.
