Speaker of the National Assembly of Parliament of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Hon. Manzoor Nadir, M.P., attended the 6th gathering of the ParlAmericas Parliamentary Network on Climate Change, which commenced today, Thursday, 23rd June, 2022.
This summit will facilitate a space for Parliamentarians, parliamentary staff, civil society, youth representatives, and experts, post the IX Summit of the Americas, to examine how parliaments could help support a clean energy transition and achieve a green future.
The sessions will be structured to explore parliamentary strategies to support the reduction of emissions in the region’s highest greenhouse gas emitting sectors: energy, transportation, land-use, and agricultural sectors. Moreover, it will be demonstrated how these actions not only contribute to mitigating climate change but also promote economic development and enhance climate resiliency by improving social welfare and gender equality and incorporating an inter-generational perspective.
Some of the sub-topics to be explored within each sector will aim to show how parliaments could support efforts to reduce emissions and enhance resilience in each. These sectors are as follows: Transportation, Energy and Agriculture land use.
For the gathering, there will be two events organised for the virtual sessions. Those sessions are as follows:
o Inter-parliamentary dialogue - the participants will have the opportunity to exchange strategies for parliaments to support the decarbonisation of the transportation and energy sector and simultaneously work to achieve the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution and the goals of the Paris Agreement in a socially inclusive manner.
o Plenary Session and the Parliamentary Network on Climate Change (PNCC) Election - The Plenary Session will be divided into two parts; the first session will allow for the participants to discuss strategies to improve land-use practices and reduce emissions associated with this sector. The second part will allow legislatures to share their experiences in working to support the electrification of transportation and the improvement of public transportation; increasing the use of renewable energy; and working to reduce deforestation and improve land use. A declaration will be adopted and the elections for the PNCC Vice-President(s) for Central America will be conducted.
The final day for the virtual gathering will be held on Tuesday, 5th July, 2022.
