Georgetown, Guyana:  The Upper East Coast (UPEC) Youth Federation Youth Group delivered a narrow victory over the University of Guyana Economics Society in the ninth match of Round 1 for Region 4 in the Speaker’s Regional Youth Debating Competition 2025.

The spirited debate unfolded at 9:30 a.m. in the Chamber of the Public Buildings, Brickdam, Georgetown. This marked the ninth and final in-person showdown for Region 4. The teams engaged passionately on the moot: “Virtual teaching is overrated.” Both sides presented compelling, well-researched arguments that captivated attendees, online viewers, and the distinguished panel of judges.

Despite the loss, Ms. Safiyyah Azeez of the University of Guyana Economics Society earned the esteemed Best Debater title for this round, impressing with her calm yet persuasive delivery.

The University of Guyana Economics Society, representing the Proposition side, secured an average score of 208 points. However, as the Opposing team, the Upper East Coast (UPEC) Youth Federation Youth Group narrowly clinched a one-point victory with an impressive 209 points.

With this win, the Upper East Coast (UPEC) Youth Federation Youth Group is the final group to advance to the second round for Region 4, joining an impressive roster of qualifying teams, including the U.G. African Cultural Association, Nyah Foundation, Cummings Lodge Youth Movement, Grove/Diamond Youth Ambassadors, JCI Guyana, the University of Guyana Women in Law Association, the Gen Advocates, and the Child Rights Ambassadors Youth Groups.

Only four teams from Region 4 will earn a coveted spot in the Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition 2025.
