Upper East Coast Youth Federation Secures Commanding Win in Match 6 of the Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition 2025

Georgetown, Guyana – The Upper East Coast Youth Federation Youth Group delivered a commanding performance in Match 6, Round One of the 2025 Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition, securing their place in the second round and a spot at the 10th Annual Youth Parliament.
Dubbed “the best debate thus far” in the competition by a distinguished judging panel, the clash between the Upper East Coast Youth Federation and the Cummings Lodge Youth Movement Youth Group was held in-person on Tuesday, June 3, in the Chamber of the Public Buildings, Brickdam, Georgetown. It was the final of four debates on the day.
The moot for the debate was: “Guyana’s border controversy must be a compulsory topic in all school curricula.”
Both teams showcased rigorous research, persuasive rhetoric, and admirable sportsmanship. The Upper East Coast Youth Federation, debating on the Opposition side, edged out their opponents with an average score of 250 points, while the Proposition, the Cummings Lodge Youth Movement, averaged 240 points.
Despite the loss, Mr. Brandon Singh of the Cummings Lodge Youth Movement Youth Group was awarded Best Debater of the match, earning praise for his eloquence, clarity, and critical engagement with the topic.
The victory propels the Upper East Coast Youth Federation Youth Group into the next round of the national competition and confirms their qualification for participation in the 10th Annual Youth Parliament.
The Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition continues to provide a vital platform for young voices across Guyana to explore national issues, cultivate civic engagement, and develop the next generation of leaders.

The day kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with a matchup between the Bygeval Secondary School Debating Club and the Ruimveldt Life Improvement Centre Youth Ministry, as they go head-to-head on the moot:
“Countries should stop complaining about climate change and adapt.”
Then at 2:00 p.m., the University of Guyana’s Women in Law Association will face off against the St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church Youth Group debating the moot: “Wages and salaries have kept pace with the rising cost of living.”
